From the chiral vortical effect to polarization of baryons: A model

Abstract: Significant polarization of Λ-hyperons produced in heavy ion collisions has been recently observed. It is believed to be a manifestation of the original rotation of the quark-gluon plasma as a whole. In a search for a microscopic mechanism for this phenomenon, we turn to the toy model of pionic superfluidity induced by chemical potentials. We argue that, in this case, the rotation is transferred to polarization of baryons. Quantitatively, the chiral vortical effect, or flow of axial current along the axis of rotation, is realized as a nonvanishing spin density of baryons. The role of vortices is crucial, and baryons emerge as a related ultraviolet cutoff.
